John Lumpkin is a key figure in the Southeast’s music scene, known for his work in world music, jazz, and gospel, inspired by drummers like Elvin Jones and Questlove. He holds a Bachelor’s in Jazz Studies from the University of North Florida and a Master’s from Florida State University, with further training at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute and Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program. Lumpkin has performed globally, from Japan to Switzerland, and was an Artist-in-Residence at Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis. He contributed to the Dr. Phillips Jazz Orchestra and Beyond Music, co-founded by Tina Turner. Honoring his Gullah Geechee heritage, he founded the Jazz Discovery Series and the John Lumpkin Institute to engage the community. As a Leadership Jacksonville 2025 member, he uses his talents and faith to make a positive impact.
